Raigad - Capital of Swarajay...

Raigad - Capital of Swarajay...

It was here that Shivaji built his capital city in the 14th century, and here that he crowned himself Chatrapati.

Raigad is a hill fortress situated in the modern day Raigad district of Maharashtra, India.

The Maratha king Shivaji made the fort his capital in 1674 when he was crowned King of a Maratha Kingdom which later developed into the Maratha.

The erstwhile capital of Chathrapati Sivaji, Raigad is famed for its rich heritage, ancient monuments and rocky terrain. Literal meaning of the term Raigad is 'the king’s fort'.

Raigad, a remote locale placed at an altitude of 2851 feet above the sea level, is gifted with a mountainous terrain.

Nestled in the Sahyadri mountain range this lovely place offers breathtaking views of natural splendour.

The fort was built by Chandrarao Mores in 1030. fort's ruins today consist of the queen's quarters, consisting of six chambers, with each chamber having its own private restroom with plumbing.

The king's public Durbar has a replica of the original throne that faces the main doorway called the Nagarkhana Darwaja.

This enclosure had been acoustically designed to aid hearing from the doorway to the throne.

The convoy of the king and the king himself used the Palkhi Darwaja. To the right of Palkhi Darwaja, is a row of three dark and deep chambers. Historians believe that these were the storages for the fort.

A secondary entrance, called the Mena Darwaja, was supposedly the private entrance of the royal ladies of the fort; it leads to the queen's quarters.

A statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji is erected in front of the ruins of the main market avenue that eventually leads to the Jagdishwar Mandir and his own Samadhi (tomb) and that of his dog Waghya.

The fort was looted and destroyed by the British upon siege.

For six years up to his death, Raigad remained the capital of the Marathas with its broad gates and magnificent monuments.

For its immence beauty, Raigad remains a hiker's paradice. The formidable Pratapgad fort with its equestrian statue of shivaji is an interesting excursion.

The main palace was constructed using wood, of which only the bases of pillars remain. Ruins of three watch towers can be seen directly in front of the palace grounds overlooking an artificial lake called Ganga Sagar Lake created next to the fort.

Today a rope-way exists to reach the top of the fort.

Shivaji's impregnable capital, the place where he was crowed and where he died. Besides the fort, you'll find his samadhi and the remains of his palace.

Adorned with a hilly terrain and natural foliage, Raigad’s awesome beauty gained her a prominent place in the tourism sector.

Strategically perched atop a wedge-shaped block of hill, split off from the Western Ghats and inaccessible from three sides.

There was only one pathway leading to the top, and prizes were offered to those who scaled the fort through unconventional methods.

Keukenhof is the most colourful and fragrant place you can visit, with over 7 million flowers forming a beautiful setting for the most fabulous photos. Come to Keukenhof and enjoy the ultimate spring feeling.

At Keukenhof you can gain inspiration and relax in the beautiful surroundings. The 32-hectare park has 15 kilometres of footpaths. Keukenhof has surprises in store for visitors of all ages. Be sure to bring your camera along on this unique experience.

History

Where Keukenhof is situated now, was a hunting area in the 15th century. Herbs for the kitchen of the castle of Jacoba van Beieren were also collected here; hence the name Keukenhof.

The current park was a section of the sizeable estate of Slot Teylingen, with beautiful untamed bushes and dunes. After the decease of Jacoba van Beieren Keukenhof fell into the hands of rich merchant families. Baron and baroness Van Pallandt invited landscape architects J.D. and L.P. Zocher, designers of the Amsterdam Vondelpark, to make a design for the garden around the castle. This design, in the English landscape style, has always been the basis of Keukenhof.

At the moment the estate belongs to a Foundation. On the initiative of the Lisse mayor of that time and a number of leading flower bulb growers and exporters, an open air flower exhibition was organised here for the first time in 1949. This expanded to an annually recurring event that has always drawn great numbers of visitors from all over the world. This is how Keukenhof became the park that we now know.

The most beautiful Spring Garden in the world.

In the 15th century Countess Jacqueline of Bavaria was the owner of the estate. In these grounds she hunted and in the court next to her fortress “Teylingen”, she grew herbs and vegetables for the kitchen. That is where the name Keukenhof comes from:       Kitchen Garden.

This year Keukenhof celebrates its 62nd anniversary.

We have welcomed more than 51 million visitors since the opening.
The total area of the park measures 32 hectares (about 80 acres).
Every year 7 million flower bulbs are planted in more than 1600 different varieties.

Every year most of the grass (especially under the trees) is removed and about 7000 kilos of annual grass is sown. Not to be walked on!
In total there are 15 kilometers of walking paths.

In 2011 the theme is: Germany, Land of Poets and Philosophers
A German theme route goes from one entrance to the other
Highlight is a flower mosaic of the Brandenburger Gate in Berlin
The beech trees of the Beech Tree Lane are over 160 years old.

At Keukenhof there are more than 2500 trees in total in 87 different varieties.

The total covered area is 15,000 m2 and there are 4 different indoor pavilions. The Willem Alexander Pavilion has over 80,000 tulips on display, in more than 600 varieties and 120 varieties of daffodils.

During the last week of opening, from May 12 till May 20 the largest indoor lily exhibition in the world can be seen here with more than 300 different varieties of lilies

The Flower bulb Information Pavilion provides information about bulb growing.7 Inspirational gardens give garden ideas and tips for the consumer.

New this year for our smallest visitors is Miffy’s garden.

There are 280 benches, 15 fountains and 32 bridges in the park.
There are 5 restaurants, 6 souvenir shops and 3 flower bulb selling points. The windmill from 1892, is in Keukenhof since 1957 and is on the Dutch Monument List

Every year 12 swans are leased for the duration of the opening period.
